Sous-Chef Jude

Friday, September 30, 2011

Jude has become very interested in cooking and baking. A few months ago I let him help me make some brownies for my mom's birthday and he's been baking/cooking with me every since. He started with baking brownies, muffins, cupcakes, etc... but now he's helping me with prepping dinner.
Most recently he discovered steaming broccoli. He thinks the steamer basket is super cool and loves to break apart the "trees" of broccoli. I actually found my steamer basket and real broccoli hiding in his play kitchen the other day. I can't be too upset about it him stealing my cooking tools especially since he's started eating broccoli now.

Now that it's fall we are baking more, especially chocolate chip pumpkin muffins. Today I wanted to try something new. Chocolate Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins. I love chocolate so I though this would be a good idea. They are good but I think I like the regular Chocolate Chip Pumpkin muffins best! Of course, Jude had to help me add ingredients and stir it all together.

He's makes a pretty good sous-chef.

Enjoy your Ice Cream and Watch Your Weight

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Joe LOVES Ice Cream. I love it too but it does not love me back. I'm trying to lose this baby weight and our nightly bowl of ice cream is NOT helping. Well, I have finally discovered a way to enjoy an occasional frozen treat and stay on my weight lose course, Weight Watchers Ice Cream.
Weight Watchers has a new line of Frozen Treats like the Snack Size Ice Cream Sandwiches, Dark Chocolate Dulcé de Leché Dessert Bars, Strawberry Fruit Bar, and Strawberry Smoothie Bar. I'm a total chocolate lover but I think my favorite is the Strawberry Smoothie
Bar, it's a blend of low-fat strawberry frozen yogurt and real strawberries. This bar is a good source of vitamin C and has the creamy goodness of a smoothie with just 60 calories and a PointsPlus value of 2 per bar.

I do also really like the Snack Size Ice Cream Sandwiches which are the perfect size to give me my chocolate fix. They are made with Dutch Chocolate and Vanilla Bean and at only 80 calories each that's a win in my book. The Dark Chocolate Dulce de Leche Dessert Bars were good but Dulce de Leche is always a little too sweet for me. I know how can something be too sweet? And the Strawberry Fruit Bars are just pure fresh strawberry goodness, perfect for warm weather or to sooth a sore throat.

I received the featured product in exchange for my honest opinion. The opinions expressed in this post are my own and not influenced by the company.

Hands Free Pumping with Simple Wishes

Although I'm not pumping exclusive anymore I still use my breast pump now and then. I love my double pump and I'm so glad I finally have one, it has made pumping so much easier. However, one of the challenges of using a double pump is that you have to use both hands to hold the pumps in place.

Simple Wishes has remedied that problem with their hands free pumping bra. I love this idea. It's so simple but so useful. One of the great features of the Simple Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bra is that you zip it closed as opposed to similar styles that use a hook closure. When you are a busy mom, like most moms, time is of the essence and every extra second counts.

Another great feature of the Simple Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bra is that it can be worn all day. There are attachable straps that help it to fit comfortably under any clothing. It can be worn in a worn in bustier, halter, tank or racerback style.

The openings for the breast shields allow you to adjust the spacing by 2 inches which helps you achieve an optimal fit for good suction. I really like the versatility of this bra. Like most women my breast size tends to fluctuate throughout my breastfeeding and the Simple Wishes bra is designed to change as you change.

Support Postpartum Education - StrollerThon in Apex, NC

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

My name is Suzanne, and I author the blog pretty*swell. I’m so grateful for Jessica sharing her space today for a cause close to my heart.

The StrollerThon, benefiting Postpartum Education and Support, is this Saturday in Apex, N.C. If you live nearby, it’s not too late to register! We’re also hosting an online raffle of a beautiful Bumbleride stroller. Tickets are only $5, and you don’t need to be present to win.

Proceeds from the raffle and event will allow our organization to keep helping moms beat perinatal mood disorders like postpartum depression and anxiety.

Here is the story of Jodi, one of our warrior moms, in her own words:

I had my breakdown about a year ago. It was a Monday morning, still very clear in my mind, and I was eight weeks postpartum with my second child. My son was sick, again, and I was crying so hard I could barely text my mom to have her come over immediately. I waited anxiously at the door with a screaming, ill child and greeted her by handing over my son, saying, "I can’t do this anymore." She had me call my doctor that morning, and I can’t thank her enough for starting me on the road to accepting and recovering from PPD.

The anxiety and depression were both new to me, and I only experienced mild baby blues with my daughter. My son, N, was a huge Christmas morning surprise to my husband and me (two pink lines? What?), and nine months later my cute little boy was born, unaware of the challenges that awaited him.

He had a very bumpy first three months and was sick often: N had everything from harlequin color change to dairy intolerance. All of this weighed me down, spending countless hours at doctor appointments, pharmacies and "researching" on the internet. I was overwhelmed. I felt guilty, exhausted, constantly sick to my stomach, and I cried many, many times a day.

I didn’t want to show any sign of weakness.

My anxiety came in the form of the clock; it was my worst enemy. I would time N’s feedings with a stopwatch, starting the timer before getting him latched on just to add a few extra seconds. I couldn’t help myself, and I knew it was silly, but it’s just what I HAD to do. I had alarms on when to feed him, when to wake him, when I should wake, when I should sleep, and I was basically driving myself over the edge. I didn’t sleep much, and the insomnia was becoming dangerous: I vividly remember driving alone one night and seriously considering crashing my car just so I could get some rest in a hospital.

My depression surfaced during those long, lonely hours at night. I dreaded the sun going down, because I felt so ALONE, and was I left with my fears and guilt. My husband was fantastic and caring, my parents were helpful, but I just couldn’t shake the darkness that enveloped my life. I felt like I was living in a deep black hole and struggling not to sink deeper. I was scared to be alone with both children, scared to leave the house, and scared to admit that I needed help and wasn’t as strong as I thought.

Through an online moms forum, I read about Moms Supporting Moms and was willing to give it a chance. After sobbing my way through my introduction and hearing others talk, I felt so comforted knowing that I wasn’t crazy and that there were moms there that *got* my feelings of guilt, anxiety and depression. If it weren’t for the caring and understanding moms I met through Moms Supporting Moms, along with my wonderful family, I wouldn’t have been able to heal like I have.

It’s been a long road, but light and happiness now fill my life, and I say yes, I can beat PPD.

So can you.

Swim Lessons

I'm so excited. I'm filling out the forms for Jude to start swim lessons at the YMCA next month. I love swimming and I love that Jude loves to swim. I've been wanting to get him in swim lessons for awhile but with all the transitions we've had this year there wasn't a good time.... until now!

Growing up I did competitive swimming and always loved being in the water. I have secretly hoped that Jude would like to participate in competitive swimming too. He already loves the water and has a pretty good grasp on "how to" swim he just needs some more practice. You never know, maybe he'll be an Olympic swimmer!

Honestly, I'd really like to start swimming again. There is a swim group at The Y for adults that I should look into joining. But first I have to lose a few baby pounds so I can actually fit into my swimming suit.

Preschool Learning at Home - Fall

Monday, September 26, 2011

This past week I started doing hands-on learning sessions with Jude. During Noah's morning nap we spend 30 min- 1 hour exploring and learning. Jude is a very smart and curious little boy which often leads to him getting in trouble. So I thought I could transfer his curiosity into positive learning and so far it's proven to be a wonderful idea.

This week we've been learning about FALL. Since Thursday was the first official day of Fall it seemed appropriate. We took a nature walk around the yard, gathered leaves, pine cones and acorns then we did a few fun fall related projects inside.

I keep everything simple and let him explore and participate as much or as little as he likes. I was surprised at the enthusiasm he had for every project. He loves to share his art projects and leaf collection with anyone that comes to visit. He's so proud, it's pretty adorable.

Monday - We made a paper chain, FALL banner and collected leaves

Tuesday - We did leaf rubbings, made leaf art and colored

Wednesday - Visited a park where we collected different leaves and acorns

Thursday - More leaf rubbings with our new leaves from the park, learned about acorns.

Friday - Fun with pumpkin faces
Saturday - We baked Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins (Joe had to work so it was like another weekday for us)

I'm not very crafty but I know how to use the internet to find new ideas. Luckily, Jude doesn't care if my crafty skills are all that good, he enjoys playing with mama and exploring new things. That's pretty much the best learning experience I can hope to give him.

Did I Ever Tell You This Embarassing Story?

Friday, September 23, 2011

Yet another awkward story from junior high.

Our church had a junior high home group that I attended on Sunday nights. We met at a friend's house and spent the first half of the evening playing outdoor-run-around games before we headed inside for our Bible study.

One evening after a rousing game of Gorilla as we convened around the picnic table waiting to head inside. I glanced down and notice that my shoe was untied. I put my foot up on the end of the picnic bench and leaned over to tie my shoe. As I lean and pressed my weight upon my foot I quickly learned that there were no nails holding said piece of wood in place. Down went my foot and up went the board and it smacked me in the face. It was quite comical, like something that would happen in a cartoon. However, being 13 I didn't find it funny and it actually hurt pretty bad. I held back tears of pain and embarassment.

Now I look back at that evening and have to laugh. Not just laugh at the absurdity of the situation but that I thought my whole life would be "OVER" because I was embarassed in front of my friends. I'm sure most of them don't remember me much less the board that almost knocked me out.

The Big Bang Theory is now on 5 Nights a Week. Check your local listing to find out what time it's on. www.bigbangweeknights.com

So Mad I Kicked a Hole in The Wall

Did you see that episode of The Middle where Sue and Brick accidentally knock a hole in the wall? Then they try to repair it and only make the situation worse. HYSTERICAL! I couldn't help but laugh as I watched their misfortune unfold and I was reminded of a similar situation I had when I was a kid.

As if junior high isn't hard enough with the hormones and awkwardness I had to be super clumsy and hyper emotional. One day after school I was home alone. I don't exactly remember what brought on my emotional rampage but I was livid about something or another. As I stomped around the house I gave a quick kick to the wall. As I was mid kick I began to lose my balance and ended up kicking a hole in the wall. I stood there in amazement and complete panic. I knew I was going to be in big trouble for kicking a whole in the wall but I was surprised that I was strong enough to make such a large hole. I didn't really know what to do since at the age of 13 I had no drywalling skills. So I did what any rational teenager would do, I put the sewing machine in front of the hole.

The sewing machine was sitting out because it needed to be taken to the repair shop. It just happened to be sitting next to the hole my foot created so I just slid it over. I thought no one will ever know, until they move the sewing machine and then I'm toast.

A few days passed, the sewing machine was taken to the shop and the hole magically disappeared. I never heard mention of the hole and just assumed my parents thought one of them had made it or something. I guess I should ask them what really happened and why I never got in trouble.

"Have you ever been in a situation similar to Brick and Sue's? See how the Hecks brilliantly true-to-life kids cover up their accident on The Second Season of The Middle on DVD, currently available for pre-order (http://bit.ly/qliHr2) and hitting shelves on 9/27/11!"

Cooking with Chef Arthur at Irregardless Cafe

Thursday, September 22, 2011

A few months ago at National Mom's Nite Out - Raleigh, I won a Food Prize which include a Cooking Class, dinner and Wine Tasting for 2 at Irregardless Cafe. So for our 4th Anniversary Joe and I decided it would be a great opportunity to cash in our gift certificate.
At the bar enjoying the live music at Irregardless Cafe

I was a little nervous heading into the evening because I didn't really know what to expect. We arrived on time and headed to the bar where they were offering wine tastings. Since Joe and I don't drink we just got an iced tea (bad decision for me since I have a super low caffeine tolerance but that's another story). The bar area was packed and I immediately realized we were going to be part a team building night along with 19 other Caterpiller employees. (We later realized there were actually 2 other couples there so we weren't completely alone)
Chef Arthur teaching us how to make Vegan Sex.

Joe and Chef Arthur making Vegan Sex.

Delicious Vegan Sex

They ushered us into the back of the kitchen where Chef Arthur shared with us the history and philosophy of Irregardless and a few of his cooking rules. Then he showed us how to make one of Irregardless' most popular appetizers, Vegan Sex. Everyone was given the opportunity to make their own Vegan Sex if they wanted. Joe made one for us and it was amazing. I never would have thought to put together Sweet Potatoes, Quinoa, Avocado and Lemon Dressing but it was a winner!
Chef Arthur teaching us how to make pasta

 Spinach and Artichoke Lasagna

Then Chef Arthur taught us how to make pasta from scratch and we put together a spinach and artichoke lasagna. He taught us many valuable cooking tips like: burning garlic will give you indigestion and how to properly cut an onion.
Grilled Eggplant for the Baba Ghannouj

After making lasgna he taught us how to make Baba Ghannouj. I've never made Baba Ghannouj but I do love to eat it and I think his recipe was one of my all time favorites. It was truely a wonderful experience to be in the kitchen with a passionate chef like Arthur. He's been cooking for over 35 years and has a wonderful philosphy toward food and a great personality.
Spinach and Artichoke Lasagna for dinner

The Dessert Platter

After the cooking session was over we all convened to the dining room where we ate dinner (Salad, Spinach and Artichoke Lasagna and Dessert) together and talked. We sat at the table with the 2 other couples and had a lovely time getting to know them. It was a very memorable experience and a date unlike any other. I highly recommend taking the Cooking Class at Irregardless, but if you don't have the cash for the class at least eat dinner there, you won't regret it.

I received no product or compensation in exchange for this post. All thought and opinions are my own and not influenced by the company. I won the gift certificate and wanted to share about a fun experience we had here in Raleigh.

Night Nursing with Milk Nursingwear + Giveaway

Noah sleeps in the bed with us at night. The main reason he sleeps with us is because it makes nighttime feedings sooooo much easier. I can just roll over and nurse him without either of us fully waking up. But to nurse easily at night I need comfortable pajamas that allow me to nurse lying down.
Milk Nursingwear has 3 great nursing night gown designs which make night nursing so much easier. I have the Goddess Nursing Lounge Dress in Teal Blue and I love it. It's probably my favorite night gown. What I like about the Goddess is that I can nurse from the top or through the lower nursing panel. It's also a super soft cotton fabric which is great for sleeping. It's also a very pretty nightgown, I think new moms should feel pretty even when they are sleeping.

In addition to great nursing night gowns milk has nursing tops, nursing dresses, nursing bras and much more.
Although I don't think nursing wear is required for nursing it is a wonderful luxury that makes breastfeeding all that much easier.

Caught in a White Lie

We tell little white lies.

"Why yes, I do love your $400 hair cut."
"Thanks Mother-in-law for this beautiful sweater."
"I did read all of those forward emails you sent me. They were funny."

As a parent I find myself telling all kind of lies and really ridiculous lies for that matter.

"Jude, if you eat all of your vegetables you will grow to be the tallest kid ever."
"I did see that kebks...mumble mumble."

We tell these lies out of love, because we want to protect those dear to us. I feel bad lying to Jude but at the same time he could theoretically grow up to be super tall, I don't know that. I'm just hoping that when he gets old enough to realized I'm not being completely honest with him he won't be completely disappointed. I'd never want to cause my child pain, which is why I guess I lie to him. Funny how that works.

Have your kids ever caught you in a lie? See how Frankie, the loving wife and mother of three from ABC's The Middle handles her white lies when her youngest son becomes the wiser. Available for pre-order

Can Guy and Girls be "Just Friends"

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Do you think that guys and girls and be "just friends"?

We see it a lot on TV shows, like The Big Bang Theory, where a girl and guy are "just friends" but then they end up kissing and the whole relationship changes.

I think that you can have friendships with people of the opposite sex without it always being sexual. However, I do believe that a lot of our relationships are based on attraction, physical or personality. I can tell you honestly that I find all of my friends attractive, not in sexual way but in that something about them attracts me. Therefore, I think a lot of times we misinterpret attractions.

But then there are times when two people are "just friends" and over time their friendship evolves and becomes a beautiful "love" relationship. I know with Joe, I was certainly attracted to him before we met but over time our relationship developed and now we've been married for 4 years and have 2 kids. I guess we're "more than just friends" now.

The Big Bang Theory focuses a lot on the relationship between the guys and Penny but then in season 4 Penny gets some girl friends, Amy and Bernadette. Do you think having relationships with the opposite sex can be non-sexual?

Check out The Big Bang Theory Season 4 now on DVD and Bluray!

Noah Asher - Month Three

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Our family has been sick all weekend and I just now realized that Noah is 3 months old today! I'll have to take his 3 month pictures tomorrow since he's already in bed but here is an update.

Weight: 18lbs (approx)
Clothing Size: 6mo+
Disposable Diaper Size: 3 (we use sposies at night)

New Skills:
  • Rolls from Back to Tummy
  • Rolls from Tummy to Back
  • Working Ab muscles with daily crunches
  • Can "sit-up" on his own for about 5 secs
  • Excellent neck control
  • Learning to use hands
  • Kicks to bounce his bouncy seat hence rocking himself to sleep. (AWESOME!!!)
Sleep:
Noah still sleeps in the bed with us. He goes to bed around 7:30 - 8pm each night. Wakes around 12, 3 and 6am to eat. Usually wakes for the day around 8am. (Since he sleeps in the bed with us I barely wake when I feed him so I'm not 100% certain of these times.)
Nap times are becoming more defined. Usually a short morning nap from about 10-11:30am then a longer afternoon nap from around 2:30/3pm till 5ish. Sometimes there are just a few shorter naps and other times it's one big long nap. (I prefer the big long naps)

Eating:
Noah is a happy baby when he's well fed and has a clean diaper. Without really thinking about it we got him on the Eat, Play, Sleep schedule which is pretty nice. Jude was an Eat, Play, Eat, Sleep kind of baby. Noah is also a very efficient nurser. He only nurses one side per feeding for about 10-15 min. Jude was a both sides for about 20 min each kind of baby. Noah also doesn't like to nurse when he isn't hungry. And doesn't want the paci a lot either. If he takes the paci it's when he sleeps.

Life with Noah:
He likes to cuddle a LOT! And since I don't think you can spoil a baby I usually cuddle him as much as I can. He spends a lot of time in the Boba carrier when we are at home and he often falls asleep there.

He likes to spend time in his bouncy seat and on his play mat. He also enjoys watching Jude, from a distance. You can tell he gets a little nervous when Jude gets too close because he's already experienced a few accidental falling on or flailing limb incidents.

Ok, that's about all for now. 3 Month pictures tomorrow but for now enjoy these:

Anniversary Date Night at Sono Sushi + A Giveaway

Friday, September 16, 2011

Last night Joe and I celebrated out 4th wedding anniversary. I haven't had sushi in a really long time so we decided to go to Sono Sushi for dinner. We went to Sono last year for our 3rd Anniversary so we thought we'd go again this year. The only difference is this year we brought Noah with us and last year we didn't even know I was pregnant. (I was probably only a few weeks along)

We started out our dinner with the Pork Gyoza dumplings appetizer. They were really delicious and a nice warm contrast to our fresh sushi that was to come. We ordered 4 rolls to share; 2 Vegetable Tempura Rolls, 1 Piano Roll and 1 Nippon Spider Roll. They were all very delicious and I would get them again. I think the Nippon Spider might be my new favorite. We even ordered dessert, we got the flour less Chocolate Torte. It was amazing. Sometimes chocolate tortes can be too rich but this one had the perfect balance between sweet and savory.
We had a lovely evening, even with our third wheel. It's always nice to be able to go on dates with my husband. We talked about life, laughed and just enjoy each others company.
