On My Own

Thursday, June 30, 2011

When Jude was born Joe had just started a new job and was only able to take off 3 days from work. It was pretty hard being stuck at home alone especially since I was stuck in bed for several days due to health reasons. However, when the baby napped I could nap, shower or get something to eat so it wasn't all that bad.

This time around Joe was able to take off 2 whole weeks. It's been nice having him here because taking care of a newborn plus an active 3 year old keeps both of us busy all day. However, Joe goes back to work next week and to be honest I'm a little terrified of being on my own with 2 small children... ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. Jude is a handful to say the least and Noah is a typical newborn that wants to be held constantly.

Every day I find my self assessing each situation, trying to decide what my plan of attack will be when I'm alone....

Scenario 1
Feeding Noah.
Jude is helping himself to the contents of the fridge.
And I have to pee.
Which is the priority here?

Scenario 2
We decide to leave the house...
Noah is crying and has a dirty diaper.
Jude is being strong-willed, doesn't want to leave and throwing himself on the ground in the middle of the parking lot.
I'm carrying Noah, diaper bag and bag from store.
What do I do?

They say being a mom is a full-time job but really I think it's more like several full-time jobs being performed by one person.

Tommee Tippee Review + Giveaway

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Before I became a mom I didn't understand the importance of a good breast pump. I initially registered for a hand pump when I was pregnant with Jude expecting that I would never use it because I would just breastfeed all the time. Little did I realized that breastfeeding all the time meant ALL THE TIME. Girls night out or Date Nights would be near impossible.

Now I know many moms prefer to breastfeed all the time but every once in awhile you deserve a little break. And when you prepare to take that break it doesn't need to be stressful worrying about if you will be able to pump enough milk. The Tommee Tippee Electric Breast Pump is a great pump for moms who only need to pump occasionally but still want a quality pump.

The Tommee Tippee Electric Breast Pump has a nice silicone cup which makes pumping comfortable yet still effective. There are also 4 different suction levels to adjust to find what works best for you. I personally like and need a stronger suction and the Tommee Tippee level 3 works great for me. It also gives you the option of plugging it in directly to the wall or using a battery. I did however, find that it does rapidly drain the batteries so I would recommend using rechargeable batteries if you are using the battery option.  The pump package comes with a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottle which is somewhat small but i like the design which makes it easy to hold and easy for baby to feed.

Overall, I would recommend the Tommee Tippee Electric Breast Pump to any mom looking for an occasional use pump that offers comfort and ease of use. It's not the kind of pump you would use every day, multiple times a day but is very effective at providing easily expressed breast milk.

Milkies Milk Saver Review + Giveaway

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

When I first saw the Milkies Milk-Saver I wondered why I hadn't thought of such an ingenious product. When I first started nursing Jude my body had a really hard time regulating my milk flow. For several days the milk just flowed from my body completely unprovoked. At the time I just stuffed cloth diapers in my shirt and stayed at home until my body figured out I didn't need gallons of milk for this babe. I wish I'd had the Milkies Milk saver so I could have saved all that precious milk.

Many women lactate from both sides while only nursing on one side. And while usually they let the nursing pad absorb the extra milk the Milkies Milk Saver lets you collect that extra milk that would otherwise go wasted. Whoever said, "don't cry over spilt milk" never pumped breast milk.
The Milk Saver was designed by registered nurses. It collects leaking breast milk when you nurse allowing you to store and save extra milk easily. The Milk-Saver has been rigorously tested to ensure zero chemical leaching and contains no BPA or phthalates.

GIVEAWAY
Win - One lucky reader will win a Milkies Milk Saver.

Jude is 3 Years Old Today!

Monday, June 27, 2011

I've been a little absent online lately because as many of you know I had a baby last weekend! We've been spending time with family and just trying to relax and get acquainted with little Noah.

In addition to baby bonding we have also been celebrating Jude's 3rd Birthday. My 2 boys will have birthdays about a week a part. Looks like June will be a busy month for us.

I can't believe Jude is 3 years old today. It seems just like yesterday I spent 17 hours in labor with my 9lb 12oz baby. You can read Jude's birth story here.

I'm so amazingly blessed to have such a beautiful family of boys. They bring so much joy to our home, even when it's complete chaos.

I love you Jude and Noah!

Milk Diapers Review + Giveaway

Breastfeeding Noah has been a big challenge mostly in part to his tongue-tie issue. We are working very hard with him and are slowly seeing results as he learns to nurse. In the mean time I'm working on increasing my milk supply and teaching little Noah how to nurse. It's not always easy but it is very rewarding.
I really like Milk Diapers products because they offer a variety of absorption for nursing pads. After Jude was born I had a big oversupply issue but this time my body seems to have regulated itself a little better so I don't need a super absorbent pad.

I was able to review several of the different nursing pads offered by Milk Diapers. I particularly like the Moisture Guard because they give you extra protection to make sure you don't have any leaks. I probably use the 4 layer pads most often because I'm just at home and can easily switch out the pads and they are very breathable. All of the Milk Diaper pads are very comfortable and sized to fit almost anyone.

Mother Goose Club Review + Giveaway

Friday, June 24, 2011

Since Noah's arrival we've been watching a little more time in front of the TV. (Which I'm totally OK with) But it's nice to switch things up a bit and watch something new. Even though most toddlers can watch the same show over and over and over again sometimes Mom and Dad want to switch it up a bit.

Jude received the Mother Goose Club DVD, CDs and Coloring Books which have all be wonderful to keep him entertained while introducing him to classic nursery rhymes. I had forgotten so many of the classic nursery rhymes but Mother Goose Club teaches kids a wide range of nursery rhymes in a fun and engaging way. At first I thought the show was a little strange but Jude fell in love with the kids wearing fun costumes and almost immediately started to quote nursery rhymes.

While nursery rhymes are fun to learn and say they are also a great way to teach children. Not only do they aid in reading but rhythm, memorization and speech. You can purchase Mother Goose Club products online.

Overcoming Breastfeeding Challenges - Noah's Story

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Before Noah was born I was preparing my plan of attack on the first few days/weeks of breastfeeding. I knew it would be rigorous but was ready with a positive attitude and plan to start strong with a bit if experience and knowledge under my belt. In no way did I think it would be easy but I thought I would feel more empowered having successfully overcome the early challenges of breastfeeding Jude.

A Little History
I have large breasts. (36G) And while many women have no problem at all breastfeeding with large breasts I also have flat nipples. Not completely flat but they aren't as pointy as other women. (I'm assuming since I haven't seen a lot of other boobs) So with Jude we had to overcome that obstacle by trying a variety of positions, helping shaped the nipple so it would fit in his mouth and a LOT of patience and practice.

I knew I had the same challenge ahead of me and I thought I had a bag full of tricks that were guaranteed to work. Boy was I in for a surprise.

Noah's Challenge
Noah was born with a moderate case of tight frenulum (tongue-tie) which when added to my already large breast/flat nipple issue put him at a great disadvantage for breastfeeding.

We tried and tried for 2 days to get him to simply latch on but he just wasn't capable of doing it. We tried tongue massage to help pull his tongue out and every other trick I found. I think I was able to get him to latch (hold my breast in his mouth) twice. (Talk about discouraging.)

The more time elapsed the more I could tell our big baby was in dire need of nourishment. He became lethargic and showing signs of dehydration. On our post-partum visit with the midwife she confirmed he would need to have his frenulum clipped. (a fairly simple and minimal pain procedure) She was able to clip his tongue and we saw immediate results. Where he previously couldn't push his tongue past his gums he was almost immediately pushing it outside of his mouth. (Hooray!) But the troubles don't end there.

He need nourishment very badly and with no sign of my milk coming in (because there had been no stimulation to let them know milk was needed) we decided to give him some formula. (I'm not anti-formula at all but I just never thought we would have need for it.) After giving him some formula a few times he became once again a lively newborn (if that's possible).

We have been working very hard to help him establish a relationship with my breasts. I have been pumping like crazy to help my milk come in so he will learn that is where the good stuff is. Just today my milk came in and he's started show great signs of improvement. While he isn't completely nursing at the breast he has latched and sucked several times which is a vast improvement.

Positive Support
We are so lucky to have such a supportive group of family and friends that have aided us in this unexpected adventure. And it's been a huge growing experience for Joe and I as we've had to make some tough decisions and push through to do what we feel is best for Noah.

We still haven't achieved total breastfeeding success but I know we will get there in time. In the meantime, we are taking a little extra effort and time to work it out. I honestly believe most women can breastfeed if they are given enough support from family and friends. I think we may have abandoned the idea of breastfeeding very quickly had we not had so many wonderful people offer their time, advice and resources to help Noah.

Noah's Birth Story

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Noah Asher Lieb
Born: 6/18/11
At Home with a Midwife
At 3:35 am
11lb and 22in

Not really sure where to start this story since I kind of felt like I was in labor for months but I'll start with the real action.

After almost 2 months of mild-medium contractions every day (no seriously EVERY DAY) and at exactly 2 weeks past my due date Noah Asher Lieb was finally born. Whew!

The real action started on Friday, June 17th. After visiting the midwife I was instructed to go ahead and take a tiny dose of castor oil and see if anything happened. If I was ready it would work and if not I'd have some clean bowels. So around 2pm I took the castor oil then laid down for a nap. (Joe's parents were in town and took Jude to Monkey Joes) For a couple of hours I felt nothing. I was slightly tempted to take another tiny dose but decided to wait until after we got home from dinner. While at dinner I started having some contractions about 5 min apart. Nothing too bad just noticeable and pretty consistent.

After we got home the contraction started to get irregular so I just figured it was my regular night contractions and we'd go about our evening. We put Jude to bed and sat down to watch an episode of Psych with Joe's parents and eat some ice cream. During the episode the contractions came back and were getting uncomfortable. It was about 10:30 so I decided to go lay down and time them. They stay pretty consistent for about 30 min (5 min apart). Joe and I got ready for bed and I asked him to time them for me. As soon as he started timing they started to slow down. So he put away his phone, we cuddled in bed and he opened his book to read. Two seconds later I heard a pop and felt a thump in my lower uterus. I asked Joe if her heard that and I popped up and thought, oh boy... I think I know what just happened. I stood up and began to feel the water flow from my body. I rushed to the bathroom and made it mostly in time to the toilet. I told Joe, my water just broke and to call Stacy. Joe said it sounded like someone was pouring a 16oz drink into the toilet. I was a little surprised it didn't just gush out but it continued on and off for about 30 min. After Joe hung up the phone with Stacy he did a little dance of excitement since he was finally about to meet his second son. To be honest I think we were both pretty happy that I was FINALLY in labor.
between a contraction before the midwives arrived

As soon as my water broke (at 11:50 pm) my contractions moved to 4 min apart. While we waited for the midwives to show up Joe worked on filling up the pool and I paced out the contractions, stopping to hold the dresser and moan and try to go with the flow. About an hour later (1am) the midwives arrived. I was still pretty coherent and we decided to move to the pool. (The pool was set up in the nursery) It was relaxing to be in the pool but I only stayed there for about 45 min - 1 hr. While in the pool the contractions intensified, I threw-up and Audrey instructed me to push with the contractions because it would feel good. And it did, what relief. However, my hips started to hurt like HELL. That was Noah making his way down. So Joe and Stacy applied counter pressure to my hips and that helped a lot. Finally I got sick of the pool and we moved to the bed where I actually started pushing. (I'm not exactly sure what time it was... I was a little busy)

I'm not really sure how I ended up in the position but it's what felt best. Joe was behind me, I was leaning on him and somehow he was hold me upright. I had my feet pressed into Audrey and Stacy on either side of me. This is the part where I did a lot of pushing. I would start of the contractions with a big NO and finish with a LETS DO THIS. I remember thinking how crazy I must sound going from I want to quit to I can totally do this. I don't remember pushing that hard with Jude. I pushed with every inch of my body and still felt like I wasn't giving enough. Audrey instructed me to put my chin to my chest, hold my breath and grunt. I would give a few big pushes with contractions but didn't really follow through long enough. I was so glad to have support that called me out on not following through even though I wanted to fake my way through labor. (btw You can't fake your way through labor)

This next part gets a bit hazy but here's what I remember. I finally started to give some huge pushes and his head started to crown. The stretching of the skin burn and I reached down to feel his head and to help stretch the skin. (I didn't do that with Jude, I was a little nervous about looking or feeling what was actually going on.) Finally his head came out and they said oh one more push and you're done. But then I wasn't done. He was stuck. Immediately, they flipped me onto hands and knees (Thank you Ina May Gaskins!) and Audrey reached in to help get the cord out from around his neck and to remove both of his stuck shoulders. I'm not sure the order of things but I remember hearing that both of his shoulders were stuck, then his hips need a little extra tug and there was some major pulling going on. Finally 4 min after his head crowned Noah was born. (At 3:35 am)

I couldn't see him because of my position but a few seconds later I was able to turn around and see them resuscitating him. He was breathing on his own and already had a pink color to him but his breaths were shallow so they had the bag on him and were timing his breaths. I don't really remember all of what happened next but I knew when I saw him start to cry he would be OK. They instructed me to hold him and touch him and talk to him. Right after he was delivered he had a huge bowel movement and probably lost about 2oz of meconium. (A stress induced poop)
First picture (Yes I do look a little like a zombie)

The Placenta
(With Jude I had a horrible time delivering my placenta. It was manually removed and caused me to hemorrhage. There was a duration of 2.5 hour between when Jude was born and when the placenta was delivered. This time we made sure it was different.)

I had a great deal of blood loss with the birth so they gave me a small dose of pitocin to stop the bleeding which also helped keep the contractions going which helped the placenta to be delivered very quickly and easily. (I'm not sure how long it was but probably less than 30 min)

After that was all done I was  shaking uncontrollably for at least an hour. It was mostly due to the intensity of the situation and maybe a little to the large blood loss I experienced. After some food, hydration, relaxation herbs and techniques I was pretty good. They stitched up my 1st degree tear which was not fun but thankfully they numbed the area and gave me plenty of distractions so I didn't really know what was going on.
Me and Mr. Noah
Brothers
After making sure everyone was OK, cleaning us up, cleaning up the house and taking a little breather the midwives left around 7am. Shortly thereafter Jude woke up. (he'd been asleep the whole time in the room next door.... so were Joe's parents). When Joe's mom got Jude he held his hands to his ears and told her he heard cats in his house and headed toward the kitchen to find him. She told him there were no cats and what he heard was a baby crying. Immediately he knew it was his baby brother and came running in the room to meet Noah. I was surprised and excited that it took him no time at all to put 2 and 2 together and happily greeted his new little brother.
Jude meeting his baby brother for the 1st time.
4 days later and we are all happy and health (aside from some breastfeeding issues which I will share about later.) I'm loving our new family of 4. It's been kind of crazy around here the past few days and I'm looking forward to it slowing down a bit. (Joe's parents are still here helping, which is great but adds a bit of excitement to Jude). I know eventually all the pieces will fall into place and our family will just be awesome. I love all my boys so much!

Wahmies Wet Bag Review + Giveaway

Friday, June 17, 2011

I'm not sure why but for over a year we didn't use a pail liner for our cloth diapers. Finally, I got one and wondered how we ever lived without it. I used to weekly scrub out the pail and use a deodorizer to keep the smell down. Now with our new Wahmies Pail Liner I don't have to do anymore scrubbing and the smell has been drastically reduced.
I love how easy it is to line the pail with the Wahmies liner, just like putting a trash bag in a trash can. And just as easily I can take it out of the can when it's full, dump the whole thing in the wash (bag included) and be done with it.
The Wahmies Pail liner fits most typical 54gt pail or 13 gallon trash can. I had a durable Waterproof Polyurethane Laminated Polyester (PUL) lining which prevents any waste from being absorbed or soaking through the fabric. The elastic closure makes it quick and simple to use and require no bungees or cords which could be potentially dangerous around little one. And it's available in 12 different colors.

Let's Play Dress Up

Lately, I've had a lot on my mind (mostly related to getting this baby to leave my body) so what better way to escape reality than with a little make believe.

Jude has just discovered Dress Up and he loves it. (I love it too!)

He is pretending to be a superhero-doctor-cowboy....

Don't let the fedora throw you according to Jude it's actually a "cowboy hat".

Rubbermaid Glass Review + Giveaway

Monday, June 13, 2011

We primarily use glass storage containers in our kitchen for a variety of reasons most of which are health based. With glass containers you don't have to worry about BPA or other harmful chemicals seeping into your food.
I particularly love that glass containers don't stain like plastic. You may have plastic food storage containers that are permanently stained red from tomato sauces or other tomato based foods. The acidity in the food soaks into the plastic and makes it impossible to clean. Now with the Rubbermaid Glass Storage container set I can store my left over pasta sauce and not worry about the container soaking up the acidity.
The Rubbermaid Glass with Easy Find Lids combines the same durability of all rubbermaid containers but with oven, dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe glass containers. The Easy Find Lids system helps keep cabinets organized by having the lids snap to the bottom of the container and to each other to make finding the right lid quick and easy. I like how there are a variety of depths/sizes that can utilize the same lid.

Rubbermaid Glass good storage containers with Easy Find Lids are available at Rubbermaid.com and at Target, Walmart and grocery stores.
