It's Almost Halloween

Friday, October 30, 2009

Let the festivities begin! Growing up we didn't really celebrate Halloween like the other neighborhood kids. We dressed up like cowboys/cowgirls and went to the church fall festival. While the festival was fun and safe I never really knew what it was like to go trick-or-treating or really dress up. On the other hand Joe grew up with hand made costumes by his mom and lots oftrick-or-treating. When we started dating he showed me how fun dressing up could really be.

Halloween 2006
Just being the big kids we really are.

Halloween 2007
Leela and Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama

Halloween 2008
DJ Lance and Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba

Hopefully this year's costumes will come together, it's been a last minute rush. I'll post pictures Sunday if everything turns out... and maybe if it doesn't.

Safety 1st Review + Giveaway

Baby proofing is a process. It evolves over time. You always have to be one step ahead your little one.

You wouldn't think a little babe could cause so much destruction but you'd be surprised. Obviously baby proofing your home isn't just for the safety of your material items but it sure helps to have your record collection safely stowed. We've been in baby proofing mode for about a year. Once Jude started rolling around we quickly broke out the outlet covers. However, much to our surprise many of our baby proofing barricades were quickly by-passed and left us searching for better products. After alot of trial and error we finally learned that Safety 1st products are the way to go.

We needed a way to keep tiny fingers safe from crushing drawers. We first bought Press 'n Pivot Latches 4 Pack  but they proved to be more dangers for our particular drawers so we advanced to the Adjustable Multi-Purpose Strap. While they aren't attractive but they get the job done and save alot of tears. (when in doubt just got with the multi-purpose strap. straightforward and effective)

Next were all the outlets and cords. We bought Press 'n Pull Plug Protectors 20 Pack first but with the questionable outlets in our older home Mr. Baby figure out how to remove them pretty quickly so we reverted to the standard Ultra Clear Outlet Plugs 12-Pack. We also bought some of these Double-Touch Plug 'N Outlet Covers, Power Strip Cover, Outlet Cover with Cord Shortener and they all work like a charm.

Finally we move to the kitchen. The Press 'n Pivot Latches 4 Pack  work great on cabinets but our greatest challenge was the lazy susan cabinet. We looked in all the stores for ideas and initially went with a knock-off store brand of the multi-purpose strap and within an hour after installation Jude figured the sucker out. Finally we discovered Lazy Susan Cabinet Lock. Oh glorious day!

The Lazy Susan Cabinet Lock is the way to go for sure if you have a cabinet like this. And Always buy Safety 1st even if the other brand is cheaper and looks the same.

The Give-A-Way
When we ordered the Lazy Susan Cabinet Lock we weren't sure how it worked so we bought two. However, you only need one so now we have an extra unused one that I want to pass on to one lucky reader.

Giveaway Ends 10/30

Listen to the Music

Monday, October 26, 2009

We love music in our house. Between or massive CD, Record and MP3 collection we probably have over 20,000 songs. You will always find U2, The National, Pulp, Morrissey, David Bowie, and Coldplay in our collection. But recently we've been listening to the new Mountain Goats album and the new Thad Cockrell album. Both live in NC and write songs based on the Bible yet they are very different in style and content.

The B Keeps Us Honest will be writing music reviews and possibly holding music giveaways in the future. We want your opinion on music to help guide our music review/giveaway venture.

What are some of the musicians/bands that you love?

Sweet Winnings

Saturday, October 24, 2009

So a few weeks ago I mentioned that I won a blog giveaway from Guessing All the Way. Well my personalized candy by Treasured Sweets arrived this week and I love it. I guess I never thought about making personalized candy for a special occasion but it's a great idea. Such a great idea that I am ordering several hundred candy bars from Treasured Sweet to help promote the launch of my mom's new accounting blog, Accounting Powered by Chocolate.

I won a dozen full sized candy bars with a Halloween theme wrapper that simply says Happy Halloween. Joe, Jessica and Jude.  They look really great and taste even better.

A big thanks to Guessing All the Way for hosting the giveaway and to Renee at Treasured Sweets who has helped fuel my chocolate addiction.

A Fair Day

Yesterday Joe took a much needed half day from work and we went to the NC State Fair. The weather was perfect, warm but not too warm. We saw cows and rabbits both of whom Jude thought were dogs and he barked at them. Then we met up with some friend who have an adorable little girl just a few months younger than Jude. Adeline and Jude had fun talking to each other but we never figure out what was so funny.

We tried chocolate covered bacon, looked at the crafts and ate NC State Ice Cream. Jude enjoyed looking at all the people and eating chocolate covered frozen bananas.

We all split some boiled peanuts and Pappys Old Fashion Root Beer then picked up alot of free stickers and pens before heading home. It was a fun but exhausting day. Surprisingly we didn't eat too horribly we just ate alot. We are a little sad we never found out what is a Chicken Boat.

Lucky Accessories Review & Contest

Monday, October 19, 2009

Lucky Accessories carries low cost, high quality handmade jewelry that is all the rage.

My husband bought me a pair of the Vintage Wallpaper Earrings for my birthday and I absolutely love them. They really are just my "style". They were very comfortable and not too heavy. After wearing them for hours they were still comfortable.

Lucky Accessories has a nice selection of earrings, necklaces and rings all handcrafted. The choices of colors and styles are endless, and the prices are so reasonable.

Kiona van Rhee-Wilson, a Dutch fashion model turned jewelry designer started her business in 2003 out of her home. Today, Lucky Accessories is sold online, at trunk shows, artist’s markets and through select retailers nationwide.

Here are just a few examples of the jewelry from Lucky Accessories that I drool over:

Check out the Lucky Me & The Little Things blog! Lucky Accessories is currently holding two Prize Posts on their blog 1) For Crafters and Designers  2)For Craft Show Shoppers.

Also, check out Lucky Accessories' Etsy Shop.

Why I'm Not on The Pill

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Aside from the fact that we wouldn't mind getting pregnant again there are many health reasons why I am not and will never take a birth control pill. (That's not to say we don't believe in any kind of contraceptives.)

How The Female Body Works?
Your body ovulates once a month if the egg is not fertilized then the lining of the uterus that had built up in preparation for the fertilized egg is unnecessary. Both the egg and uterine lining leave your body preparing for a new month. This is reffered to as your period.

How do birth control pills work?
Birth Control pills are synthetic hormones.
Many birth control pills contain high levels of estrogen that convince your pituitary gland that you are pregnant and therefor you do not to ovulate. Because your body thinks you are pregnant, the uterine lining thickens. Once you start the placebo pills, however, your estrogen level drops suddenly, and your body menstruates “normally.” This abnormal cycle is what millions of women experience every month, and yet few doctors discuss the consequences of taking these prescriptions for year after year.

The Risks
  • Larger breasts
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Reduced or increased acne
  • Slight nausea
  • Emotional sensitivity right before your period
  • Mood swings throughout your cycle
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting
  • Breast tenderness
  • Decreased libido
  • Increased risk of cervical and breast cancers
  • Increased risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Migraines
  • Higher blood pressure
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Infertility
  • Benign liver tumors
  • Decreased bone density
  • Yeast overgrowth and infection
  • Increased risk of blood clotting
None of those side effects sound fun to me, so I choose to NOT take The Pill.

So What Other Options Are Available?
Condoms, the diaphragm and cervical cap, and fertility awareness.  I think all women should learn about fertility awareness weather or not you plan to use it to prevent pregnancy. Here's a good place to start. Before I got married I did alot of research and learn a great deal of information about my body that I never knew. The things they don't teach you in health class.

If you're interested in fertility awareness or charting your cycle this is a great site: My Monthly Cycles

Finding My Way

Saturday, October 17, 2009

I've been a little preoccupied lately trying to develop my new blog, The B Keeps Us Honest. I feel like We3Liebs was becoming a jumbled mess with no clear direction. So that's what led me to start this new blog which will feature all my product reviews, giveaways, coupon deals and freebies.

We3Liebs will serve more as a family life blog. I will still post about my Harris Teeter triple deals, Menu Planning Monday and always cute pictures of Jude.

I'm really excited about this new blog venture so if I'm MIA for a little while don't worry I will be back. I can't resist bragging about my family. I mean they are pretty awesome!

Book Review: Sleepy Sun

Sleepy Sun Cover

Every night we read to Jude before bed. It helps him to calm down and acts as a sign that it's time to go to sleep. He loves being read to anytime of day but when he's tired sometimes he'll grab a book and head to his room. So Cute!

A week ago we added a new book to our bedtime routine, Sleepy Sun by Mari Hanson. It's a great little paperback book with colorful artwork filling the entire page. I was pleasantly surprised when the copy I received was signed by the author and even included a personalized message to my son. Thank you Mari!

Mari Hanson

When I first showed Jude the book he took it and started to head upstairs as if he knew it was a bedtime book. Later that night as we read it before bed he intensely studied the vibrant pictures and wanted to help turn the pages. One of the key strengths of this book is most certainly the beautiful acrylic paintings done by Illustrator Kathleen M. Hanson. The art is very unique and slightly abstract which encourages creativity. While the overall concept of a bedtime book isn't new this story is very fun and sweet. The story follows the sun on a busy day shining light around the world and ends with the sun going to sleep. (We'll deal with the physics of the Earth rotating around the Sun later but for now thanks Sun for setting a great example and going to bed.) The first few times I read the book I had trouble catching on to the rhyme scheme but eventually I got the hang of it and now it's an easy read.  I would love it if the book were available in a board book since my son loves to flip through the pages himself but hasn't quite mastered turning paper pages without ripping them.  I guess this is a good opportunity to teach him to be gentle. Sleepy Sun is quickly becoming a bedtime classic in our home.

Would I recommend Sleepy Sun? Certainly! It is a must have bedtime book for children of any age. You can learn more about Mari Hanson and The Sleepy Sun on her website. The Sleepy Sun can be purchased for $14.99 on Amazon.com or at MariHanson.com.

This is a Mama Buzz review. The product was provided by: Mari Hanson for this review.

About Me

I'm Jessica. I'm married to Joe. We have 2 adorable sons, Jude and Noah. We live in Raleigh, NC. We are always on the search for exciting new things to do especially if they are free. I am not crafty. I am not a good writer. However, I find great joy spending time with my family, visiting new places and finding great deals!

I went to college in Florida where I studied Communication but probably learned more about relating to people by living in a dorm than from any text book or class. After college I spent a few years trying to find my "thing" and somehow landed in television production. It's a stressful industry requiring long hours and hard work but I loved it.

In 2007 I married the best man in the universe and in 2008 we welcomed our honeymoon baby earthside at home with a midwife. Since becoming a stay at home mom I've learned how to slow down and enjoy life. But I still had an itch to work which is why I started The B Keeps Us Honest. Read even more here.
