Wish List Wednesday

Because money doesn't grow on trees and The Foster Family had a great idea I'm participating in Wish List Wednesday.

First since our TV and DVD player are on their last leg it would be wonderful to upgrade to the 46" BRAVIA Z Series LCD HDTV. Watching our Netflix movies would be alot more enjoyable without the high pitch squealing the TV makes for the first 5 minutes it's on.

Second would be tickets for my husband and I to see Star Wars in Concert. This is more for me to watch his face as he smiles from ear to ear like a kid on Christmas morning. Plus it's the only way I'd probably convince him to see the symphony.

Third would be a trip to London, England or really anywhere in Europe in the fall would be nice. We have some friends that just booked their trip to London and I became green with envy. Not that I haven't been there twice already. But I think it's like a drug once you start you always want more.

Finally I'd like to be debt free. I know it's not something you put on your Christmas list but boy the weight that would be lifted off our shoulders. It might actually make some of the things listed above feasible.

DIRT

Fall is upon us. The windows are open. I've already made chocolate chip pumpkin cake. And socks are on my feet. I love the summer as you may have read about here and we spent alot of time outdoors this summer but you still get all hot and sticky. So fall brings a welcome change to being outside.

On Monday after a quick trip to the grocery store to buy a few ingredients needed for the aforementioned cake we spent a little time in the front "yard". (I used the term "yard" very loosely because it mainly consists of a wooden platform, sidewalk, rocks and mulch.) Jude took this opportunity to remind me that he is a BOY! While I sat in a comfy chair talking on the phone he moved a large portion of our rock bed to the sidewalk, then back again to the rock bed. This went on for about 15-20 minutes until he decided to eat a few rocks which he quickly learned was a bad idea. He was covered in dirt by the end of our time outside. What can I say?  He's a boy!

Grocery Shopping Alone

Saturday, September 26, 2009

This morning my boys went to see Toy Story 3D and I went to the grocery store... alone!

A friend won 4 free tickets to see Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in 3D and she couldn't use them so she passed them on to us. Joe, Jude and friends went to see the free movie and I took advantage of being sans baby to do a little grocery shopping. First, I went to Whole Foods where they had alot of people passing out samples and selling local handmade goods. I even got to use a hand basket instead of a big ole cart in the crowded store. Then I went to Harris Teeter and got some great deals. I didn't use many coupons but I still spent the same amount as usual. (HT Natural London Broils were BOGO)

Joe reported that Jude had a great time at the movies. He didn't want to wear the 3D glasses but he did want to hold them. He sat through the entire film which is pretty impressive for an almost 15mo old.

Now the boys are home. Jude is sleeping. Joe is playing Mario Kart on the Wii. I'm blogging.

We don't have much planned for the day other than my nephew's 10th birthday party this evening at Golden Corral(his request). I love weekends like this. Nothing on the calendar. No major projects needing to be done around the house. Just relaxing with my family.

Recipe Request

Spaghetti, Tacos, Chili, Baked Chicken, Pizza.... If you look my weekly meal plans you'll see that we eat these meals alot. I'd really like to spice things up, literally!

We used to have cable and I loved watching The Food Network but alas the cable company wised up and stopped our free cable. I have a few cookbooks and there's always the internet but I want to know for sure that it will be delicious and not a waste of my time and money.

I love my crock pot and try to use it at least once a week but that requires planning and remembering to thaw the meat which doesn't always get done. We aren't picky eaters. But we do have a few rules.
1. Eggs are for baking.
2. Mayo is a no no since it has raw eggs in it.
3. Baby Jude is allergic coconut... nothing else, just coconut.
4. We eat meat but we also like vegetarian meals.

So here is my request to all of you cooks and non-cooks alike. What is your favorite meal to cook? I need some inspiration, but inspiration that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Friday Is On It's Way

Thursday are hard for me. I can feel the weekend lurking right around the corner but it's just out of reach. By Thursday I'm in desperate need of encouragement so I thought I'd start a blog meme and have everyone tell me how they get through the final hours of their week.

Friday IS On It's Way

What was your greatest struggle this week? No Naps. Jude didn't want to take his afternoon nap which resulted in a cranky baby. This is never fun for anyone.

How did you power through? Instead of fighting for a nap I gave in and watched Yo Gabba Gabba with him until daddy came home.

What kept you going when you wanted to give up? Brownies and Listening to Kings of Convenience. Date night last night with my husband to see The Informant!

What are you looking forward to this weekend? Spending time relaxing with my family.  Pay Day is Friday too!

To Share how you're Making it Till Friday

1. Post my Button or Link on your site.
2. Link to me with Mr. Linky

It's the First Day of Fall and I'm in Love.

It's officially the first day of Fall! In Raleigh it's a cool and rainy day which seem appropriate for such an occasion.

Growing up I always associated fall with going back to school so I was never a real fan of the season. Also, popular fall colors are brown, orange and yellow and as a child my favorite color was purple hence I thought fall colors were drab and ugly. Plus, I've always been a summer girl. You don't meet too many people that love HOT weather but I most certainly do. I love the beach, the pool and all things summer.

Today I feel much differently about fall. I'm now a big fan of brown and orange. (I'm still on the fence about yellow. It makes me look jaundiced when I wear it.) I think I started to really fall in love with fall in 2005. You see my husband and I started dating in the fall of that year and there's just something about the smell of autumn that reminds me of our first few dates. Especially autumn evenings with the crisp air and smell of fallen leaves. It's all the little things I remember like walking to the Chinese restaurant on our first date. The first time holding cold hands. Sitting in the car talking and listening to Joseph Aurthur, not wanting to go back out into the cold night air. The shivers of excitement that come from discovering how deeply you can love someone.

I'm still a summer girl but fall will always have a special place in my heart.

HT Triples - Final Trip

So I made two more trips to Harris Teeter for triples but somehow I lost one of my receipts so I'll just recap my last trip.

I realized yesterday morning that we were almost out of dishwasher detergent so I rationalized my trip and while I was there I picked up a few things. Specifically using coupons from this Sunday's paper.

Mt. Olive Pickles
Tic Tac Chill
2 Mentos Gums
2 Mahatma Rice
7th Generation Dish Detergent
Bread
Luigi Italian Ice
McCain Sweet Potato Fries

Total: $27.04
OOP: $9.94

I spent a little more than our allotted grocery budget for this week but I justified it by recharging my stockpile.

Frankie says Relax

Sunday, September 20, 2009

There wasn't anything exceptionally noteworthy about Saturday but I think that's what made is so great. Just a relaxing day with my family. We slept in. Cleaned the house a bit. Joe practiced guitar for Sunday church while Jude watched from his highchair. I read a little. Jude took a nap. Joe made grilled cheese, avocado and tomato sandwiches for lunch.

After lunch we decided to spend a little time outside so we went downtown to check out the SparkCon activities. We browsed the local vendors, side-walk chalk drawings, graffiti artists and another bizarre creature by the creator of the infamous Barrel Monster.

Then we spent the latter part of the afternoon at our favorite spot, Global Village. Drinking coffee (or an awesome hazelnut chocolate milkshake in my case), reading and playing dominoes(or rather throwing them on the floor in Jude's case).

We finished off the day with a yummy dinner of Chicken and Fried Orzo with Vegetables and Basil. Put Jude to bed. Then watched Valkyrie, while not a feel-good movie still pretty decent. (According to my dad it's not very historically accurate, so there's that.)

Anyway, it's Sunday afternoon my parents stopped in to visit for a bit. We just got home from a walk and are getting ready to eat dinner before Joe heads off to play at church service number 4 today. I'm looking forward to a relaxing evening after he gets home to round out the relaxing theme we've had going on this weekend.

Whole Foods Steals

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

As of lately I've been killing the deals at Whole Foods. Thanks to my obsessive coupon blog followings and from following my local store on Twitter I've come home with some great stuff.

Today I went to get my Free Organic Bagged Salad and Salad Dressing with a coupon I picked up in the store for September Madness. While there I check out the other deals and picked up some Apple Crisps for $.99. But somehow my order looked like this

Organic Bagged Salad
Salad Dressing
Apple Crisps

Total: $.11

The cashier was just as confused as I was but didn't seem to care.

Now every now and then Whole Foods has coupons for FREE items in the store. They are on a first come basis and there isn't really much notification of when they will put them out. I looked all of the store for some but didn't find any until I was putting my cart away and noticed something in another cart. Low and behold there was a 3 coupon sheet for FREE items in October. Including Free Milk, Free Rolls, and a Free Pumpkin! SCORE

Final Day of Stay-cation

Yesterday was the last day of our stay-cation and our actual Wedding Anniversary. We decided to take it easy and made no real plans to do anything.

We started off the day with a walk to the park where Jude played and we enjoyed the nice weather. Then we took our time getting ready for the day while Jude took a nap. After he woke up we ran a few errands before going to lunch at Sosta Cafe (thanks Kiona) where they have great food and most importantly the best root beer ever, Sprecher!

After lunch we laid low at home until our stomachs needed to be recharged. We went to Whole Foods to pick up some FREE things. However, they were out of Rotisserie chickens so we had to go to back up plan B for dinner. While there Joe did get me some lovely flowers that were FREE with a coupon. (Those are the best kind of flowers!) We ate dinner at Chick-fil-a where we used our Free Order Friday receipt.

After dinner we went home, put the babe to bed and watch an episode of the X-Files. Overall it was a fairly uneventful Anniversary but a great relaxing day with my family.

A Day at the Beach.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Yesterday we took Jude to the beach for the first time. It was a gorgeous September day and we had a great time. We went to Wrightsville Beach and then spent a little time in downtown Wilmington. Other than some construction traffic on the way there and then getting a little turned around trying to come home it was a pretty perfect day.

Anniversary Stay-cation - Part 1

Sunday, September 13, 2009

On September, 15th Joe and I will be celebrating our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. I think Wedding Anniversaries are awesome and deserve much celebration. Not because we are celebrating "making it this far" but because "on this day several years ago we made a life changing covenant".

We decided to take a little "stay-cation" this year. Joe hasn't taken off any vacation time from work so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity. We're about half-way through our "stay-cation" and so far it's been packed full of fun.

It all started Friday evening after Joe FINALLY got off work at 7pm. We had a lovely dinner at home, spent some down time as a family and then Joe's parents arrived to visit for a few days. Saturday morning/afternoon we spent at the NC Museum of Life Science specifically to check out the special event, Hero's, Villan's and Special Effects. It's already a great museum as I explained here but thrown in some Storm Troopers, Foley, Special Make-up and Model Artist and Joe was in heaven. Oh yeah, Jude had a good time too!

We got home late afternoon and Joe and I pack a bag and left Jude with Grandma and PaPa for the night. We had reservations at the Brownstone Hotel and dinner plans at Shaba Shabu. After gorging ourselves with Sushi and Chocolate Mousse Cake we headed downtown to walk around on such a gorgeous September night. As usual we ran into some friends and chatted. Then we came across a Free Outdoor Symphony concert in City Market. They finished off the evening with the Star Wars theme and again Joe was in heaven!

We ended our night with drinks at The Busy Bee. Chatting and planning our Sunday morning breakfast with some visiting out-of-town friends.

This morning we slept in (till almost 9am!) Yes, we skipped church. Then met our friends DJ and Zoya at Finch's for a good ole southern breakfast complete with grits and biscuits. After a nice long visit with our friends and finally being reunited with our snuggly little boy, who had a great time with grandma and papa, we decided it was time for lunch. (at 2pm!) We ate lunch with the In-laws at Brio Tuscan Grille before Grandma and PaPa had to go home.

Now we are planning for the second half of our stay-cation which will be just as awesome but maybe a little less busy. Tomorrow we're hoping to take a day trip to introduce Jude to the beach. I'm pretty sure he'll love it. Then on Tuesday, our actual anniversary, I think we'll just play it low key and relax as a family before Joe has to go back to work on Wednesday.

All-in-all it's been a great weekend even though it sounds a bit like this anniversary weekend. But I guess the new ultra modern 2nd anniversary gift should be sushi... or maybe just every anniversary. YUM.
