Breastmilk - Never Recalled

One way we saved a ton of money is by breastfeeding. (12 mos of BFing saves approximately $1,433) Jude has been breastfed for 14 months. My initial hope was to BF for 1 year and then consider weaning but now that we're here it makes me sad to think of quitting. I'll admit it was really hard in the beginning with extreme pain, mastitis and latching issues but after 2+ months of struggling we finally hit our stride. I didn't like breastfeeding at first. It hurt. It took a look time. I always had to pee during. It consumed me, literally. But I knew it was best for my son and my only reasons for wanting to quit were selfish. Honestly we couldn't afford formula so I had to tough it out. I'm so glad I did. (It's amazing what you can do when you have no other options)
Jude exclusively breastfed for 6 mo. and then we started introducing solids. He loved him some solids but he also loved some milk. Now at 14 mo we basically only BF before sleeping. (naps and nighttime. occasionally in the morning or if he's grumpy)
I read an article today about recalled formula and then saw someone comment with this list of slogans for breastfeeding and thought they were pretty awesome.
Here are my Top 10 Breastfeeding Slogans:
1. I breastfeed because I couldn't produce enough formula.
2. Breastmilk: Never Been Recalled.
3. I drink until I pass out.
4. If breastfeeding in public disturbs you, please feel free to put a blanket over your
face.
5. My baby does not like to eat in the bathroom, do you?
6. Yes, I am still breastfeeding; get over it.
7. Formula-$10. Paci- $2. Breastfeeding - Priceless.
8. Don't be a weaner. Breastfeeding is for toddler's too!
9. When you feed your children in a bathroom, I will too.
10. Instant Happy Baby: Just add breastmilk.
Plus:
"Breastfeeding: A Moveable Feast".
I will be sad when we end our breastfeeding adventure but who knows when. I have no idea when or how to even start weaning.
At what point did you completely wean your baby if you breastfed?
How did you do it?

Our Yo Gabba Gabba Obssesions
Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Jude doesn't watch much TV. Usually we're always on the go but on the rare occasion I'm feeling lazy or the weather isn't cooperating the DVD player is my BFF.
Now the first year in our townhouse we had free cable but then one random day the cable company wised up and left us searching for our antenna. Luckily we have a huge selection of DVDs, and a Netflix subscription so we'll survive. But before we lost our cable we discovered Noggin and Nick Jr. Those channels you usually skip over if you're not a parent. Jude's favorite part of Noggin was Moose A. Moose and the songs between shows. If they made a DVD of just those songs I think it'd sell like hotcakes! He also took a liking to Yo Gabba Gabba, mostly because mom and dad took a liking to it.
I mean seriously, this show is pure genius. It not only appeals to 1 year olds but also 31 year olds. If you have to watch a tv show 25,038 times you need to pick something with songs you don't mind humming all day, every day. With special guest like Jack Black, The Ting Tings, The Shins, Amy Sedaris and Biz Markie what's not to love.
We own 2 YGG DVDs and 1 Nick Jr. DVD with an epidsode of YGG. Jude knows where these DVDs live. He also knows how to turn on the TV, DVD player and receiver. He turns everything on and dances around with the DVD case in hand until I turn the show on. (Right now he's turning on the DVD player.) To most people "GaGa" is just a typical sound that babies make but in our house it means serious business.

Let's Eat: Grilled London Broil
I often find great deals on Natural London Broils at Harris Teeter. (Once I got a $15 steak for $3!) I never really knew how to cook London Broil but for $3 I'm willing to learn. Now I have a whole arsenal of steak recipes I can pull out at the drop of a hat.
One of our favorites recipes is Grilled London Broil because it makes for great leftovers either on a sandwich, a salad or even in a burrito! Now London Broils are a tough cut of meat and require a little preparation to make them delicious. But if you follow these two easy steps I promise you'll love it. Step one is to tenderize and step two is marinate. Simple.
I start with a meat tenderizer and beat it until both sides are well punctured.
Then I put it in a plastic bag, add my homemade marinade and let it soak up all that goodness for at least 3 hours (24 hours is ideal).
Then Joe takes over as grill master and works his magic.
Now I don't like overdone meat so we usually do about 6-7 min per side(depending on the thickness of the meat). But if you can't stand the sight of pink meat I'd leave it on a bit longer.
Here is my homemade marinade recipe:
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoon spicy whole-grain mustard
- 2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
YUM!

There's Nothing to do in This Town!
Saturday, August 22, 2009

I remember saying that alot when I was in high school. I'm sure it was partly true but mostly I was just uninformed. Every Saturday I would read the EVENT section of in the newspaper but it was usually a list of book clubs and church carnivals. YAWN. But now thanks to the evolution of the internet my calendar is always full!
I thought I'd share a few of my resources for keeping up with all the hot events going on around town. If you don't live in the Triangle I'm sure there are similar sites in your neck of the woods.
Triangle Mom2Mom - A division of the News and Observer that helps mothers in the Triangle connect, share advice and keep up on exciting events.
Carolina Parent - A monthly magazine published for parents in the Triangle.
City of Raleigh - This one takes a little looking around but alot of City Parks, Museums and Art Associations list their upcoming events on this site.
Visit Raleigh - Just pretend your a tourist and there's tons of stuff to do!
Downtown Raleigh - Where all the hip kids go to find out where to go and what to do.
Independent Weekly - Music, Movies, Cultural Events and MORE!
And thanks to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites all of my mommy friends keep me up-to-date on everything else.
A few upcoming events I'm really excited about are Book Babies at East Regional Library, Heros, Villains and Special Effects at the Museum of Life and Science, Mordecai Historic Park Baking Contest, and Baby Time at the Cameron Village Library.
What resources do you use to keep up with events in your area?
Super Doubles

I haven't even started recovering my coupon binder from triples and now there's talk of Super Doubles at Harris Teeter again. I've heard this from alot of reliable sources so I better get moving.
Super Doubles will be 8/26 - 9/1
Discovering a New Park
Friday, August 21, 2009
Yesterday after a doctors appointment Jude and I decided to check out a new park. We were near REX Hospital and I remembered going to a park off Edwards Mill Rd. awhile back. So I drove around a bit and low and behold we found it! Laurel Hills Park
What a cool park. The "All Children’s Playground was carefully designed for the enjoyment of children of all physical capabilities." In addition to the standard swings and slides there are several swinging bridges and lots of towers to climb. Jude had fun toddling around chasing an older boy. We didn't stay too long since it was like 1000 degrees outside. But when the weather cools down a bit we will definitely be going back.

Purple
Meal time is always a fun adventure around here. Jude eats pretty much everything we eat. I'm not about to cook a separate meal just for him. (Unless we're having something I know he can't eat. But usually there is some part of the meal he can enjoy.) Last night I made Chicken Piccata, Baked Purple Sweet Potatoes and Green Beans. Now Jude loves regular Sweet Potatoes but I'm pretty sure Purple Sweet Potatoes blew his mind.
He ate a whole sweet potato and loved every bite.

Now this baby can pack away the food. At this meal he ate some goldfish, some yogurt covered raisins, a few green beans, some chicken, a whole sweet potato, a few cookies, some bites of mommy's Klondike Bar and a whole strawberry.
Our first visit to Marbles
Yesterday we went to Marbles Kids Museum with our friends Andrea and Oscar. Thanks to a friend we had free passes to Once Upon a Thursday story time, however we didn't actually go to story time. It was our first time and there was fun to be had. However, I will admit it pales in comparison the Museum of Life and Science. But since that is in Durham and we are in Raleigh we will probably frequent Marbles.
Jude toddled around and investigated the play area of course finally deciding the trash can was the coolest thing there. I did finally convince him to check out some of the actual play things. He agreed the miniature car was stellar.

We will definitely be visiting Marbles again. Especially if our friends go.
Mourning to Dancing
Thursday, August 20, 2009
I feel an unexplainable and illogical joy this morning.
Yesterday was a very hard day but it was also a beautiful day filled with grace and love.
We spent almost 3 hours at the doctors office in the morning. Jude didn't take a single nap all day. We were sad. However, during our time of mourning we received an abundance of love and support from our family and friends. Joe's boss gave him the rest of the day off and we spent the afternoon just being a family. We went to the library, took a walk, and relaxed at a coffee shop. Jude finally went to bed a little earlier than usual. Joe and I had a quiet dinner together, watched a good movie and went to bed at a reasonable hour. I awoke this morning with so much peace it made me laugh. I'm sitting here listening to music and watching Jude laugh as he toddles around the house.
I'm reminded of Psalm 30:11-12 "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing: you have put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing praise to you, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you for ever."
God is so good. We are so blessed. Blessed to have friends that extended offers to help watch Jude, bring us food or just help in anyway possible. I know we have so many faithful friends that are praying for us and we can definitely feel those prayers.
Our Spirit Baby
Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Today we are sadden at the loss of our pregnancy. We'd just found out a week ago we were expecting so it was a short lived journey but still hard nonetheless. Last night as Joe and I were talking and he reminded me of "Spirit Babies" which we'd read about in Peggy Vincent's Book, The Baby Catcher. It brought me great hope to know that one day we will meet this baby.
I know that God is watching over us and will bring peace and healing to our home.
Here is the excerpt from "The Baby Catcher"
Spirit Baby
Colin, my twelve-year-old son, discovered me late one rainy afternoon sitting at the kitchen table, a damp Kleenex crumpled in my left hand, wiping my eyes as I tried to compose myself for his sake. It was the third week of January, two months after I’d miscarried a pregnancy, but I still found it impossible to get through a day without at least one meltdown into misery.
...
Colin asked, "Are you crying about the baby?" and when I nodded tearfully, he said, "Well, you just have to have another one, Mom, because it’s a Spirit Baby, and you should be its mother."
I must have looked puzzled because he said, "Don’t you know about Spirit Babies? How could I know about them if you don’t? I mean, you’re my mom!" But he could see my perplexity.
So my first child, this not-yet-teenaged boy, pulled a wooden chair to my side and draped his thin arm across my shoulders, saying, "Well, Mom, here’s how it is. See, I was one myself, so that must be how I know. Anyway, every woman has a circle of babies that goes around and around above her head, and those are all the possible babies she could have in her whole life. Every month, one of those babies is first in line. If she gets pregnant, then that’s the baby that’s born. If she doesn’t get pregnant, the baby goes back into the circle and keeps going around with all the others. If she gets pregnant but something bad happens before the baby’s born…now listen, Mom, because here’s the really cool part. It goes back into the circle, but it becomes a Spirit Baby, and all the other babies give it cuts. Each month, it’s always first in line. Isn’t that great?
"So you just have to get pregnant again, and you’ll have the same Spirit Baby. If you don’t, though, then the baby circle will just beam that little Spirit Baby over to some other woman’s circle, and it’ll be first in line for her. It keeps being first in line somewhere until it finally gets born.
"But it’d be a shame for you not to have it yourself, because I know how much you want it. So you just have to try again. Mom, remember that baby you lost before I was born?" I nodded wordlessly. "Well, that was me. Really. I’ve always known I was a Spirit Baby. I mean, I know what I’m talking about here, Mom."
Our Field Trip to Durham
Monday, August 17, 2009
Last Thursday Jude and I took a little field trip with our friends Kim and Jacob to the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham. We got a little lost on our way there and couldn't find a gas station anywhere in Durham on our way home but all the hassle was worth it! It's a little bit pricey (kids under 3 do get in free) but one day I might consider getting a membership. (For the 2 person membership you'd only have to go about 4 times a year to get your money's worth) Anyway it's a great place and we're hoping to go back in September when Joe's parents come to visit. There is a special exhibit we want to see; Heros, Villans and Special Effects!
We only stayed about 4 hours so we didn't get to see and do nearly everything but hopefully next time we'll be able to pick up where we left off. Jude really like the butterflies, there were so many of them flying around. We played instruments in Loblolly Park, danced in soundSpace, built towers to knock over, played in the toddler learning area, launched giant seeds, pumped water, laughed in the fog, steered a sailboat, and much more.

HT Triples - Trip 1
Friday, August 14, 2009
I had to put a few things back because I had more than 20 coupons. This is the first time that has ever happened. So maybe tomorrow we will make another trip.
In addition to my good deals I'm pretty sure the manager gave me money back for something I never paid for to begin with. It's a long an complicated story and I didn't actually figure out what happened until I got home.
Here's what I got:
Corn Meal Mix
2 Muffin Mixes
Cookie Mix
Newmans Own Pasta Sauce
Huggies Natural Diapers
Wishbone Salad Dressing
Grande Tortilla Chips
Satin Care Shaving Gel
Gum Tooth Bruch
Earth Spinach
2 Avocados
Organic Bananas
Zucchini
Earth Grain Bread
2 Klondike Bars
B & J Ice Cream
2 Red Baron Pizzas
Florida OJ
Heluva Good Cheese
Curad My Little Pony Bandaids!
Kix
Dinner Rolls
OOP: $33.35
Saved: $46.19
Received: $5 back from crazy manager!
Let me explain... I had to IP coupons for the Kix and Dinner rolls that the cashier couldn't get to scan. HT has a policy that if the IP won't scan they won't take it. So she removed them from my order. Then the manager had me come over to the Service Desk where she tried the coupons again and got them to work. So she gave me the difference of the coupons tripled. I didn't really understand what happened since I had Jude with me and he was all over the place and the lady talking wasn't making any sense. Oh Well.

I use the internet alot... mostly to keep in touch with friends(cute pictures of babies mostly), to find information(who sang that song, "Steal My Sunshine"?) and buy things (mostly Freebie Blogs!). One part of the internet I try to steer clear of is all the people that, what I like to call, rant blog. (This term can apply to Facebook posts, Twitter or any social networking site.) Rant Blogging is just plain annoying and doesn't really serve any purpose.
Example: I don't like coconut. So I join an anti-coconut FB group and post all kinds of links and blogs about how horrible coconut is and people that eat it must be ogres. Obiviously people that hate coconut will join me in my coconut bashing efforts. But people that love coconut will debate me, saying how can you be so ingorant? only morons don't like coconut.
What was gained from all my anti-coconut cyber soliciting? Nothing
Now lets apply this to real life. Politics. Religion. Parenting. People have very strong opinions about these issues and I think it's great to be passionate. But I think waiting until someone asks for your opinion makes a greater impact. Most likely they are willing to consider your point and in turn spark a constructive conversation about the topic, even if they don't embrace your views.
I'll admit I have trouble sticking to this plan. I get really excited about an issue and must let everyone know I've figured it out and I'm RIGHT!
Here's the real question is this post a rant blog?
BTW Len sang "Steal My Sunshine"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMl2QtZmLEQ
Clean up that mess.
So Jude isn't officially walking independently yet but he gets around pretty well. In fact today alone he's managed to:
- clear 2 shelves of DVDs
- throw away 4 cans of tea
- empty a tin of 30+ tea bags
- pull out a few of Joe's books
- read the newspaper
- play with the pots and pans
- pull the DVD bin out of the shelf push it around the room while dropping a few DVDs every few steps.

Thursday, August 6, 2009
The last book I finished was Pirates in an Adventure with Napoleon by Gideon Defoe. It was a pleasantly fun and easy read, I recommend it!
Now, I'm pretty picky when it comes to reading. If I'm not in love with the book it will take me years to finish. Even if the book IS remotely interesting I fall asleep within the first few pages. I don't know why but books make me sleepy. It doesn't matter the time of day, as soon as I start to read my eyes get heavy and I re-read the same sentence 30 times before I finally give up.
However, if I'm fortunate enough to find a book that captures my attention I will read everything I can find by that author. Usually this plan works. Take for instance the book I just finished Pirates in an Adventure with Napoleon before this book I read Defoe's other Pirate books; Pirates in an adventure with Scientist, Pirates in an Adventure with Ahab and Pirates in an Adventure with Communists. (I recommend them all!) This method has also worked with anything written by Roald Dahl! But then again it is ROALD DAHL what's not to love. However, on a whim I once bought a book by Paul Auster entitled Travels in the Scriptorium it was a great book somewhat reminisent of an episode of the Twilight Zone. So in keeping with my plan I picked up a copy of another book by Auster, Timbuktu. I've been reading this book for 3+ years and it only has 192 pages. I doubt I'll ever finish it but it still sits on my nightstand hoping to be read.
So lately I've been reading anything by David Sedaris. I started with Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim then progressed on to Holidays on Ice. My plan seems to be working out pretty well, not only is Sedaris a great story teller and humorous I like reading his stories based in Raleigh. When he references, Crabtree Valley Mall I know excatly where that is and what it used to look like before the big remodel during the early 90's. There's something comforting about that. Anyway, I'm currently reading Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays. I like short stories alot since I'm not very patient and I need to know the resolution will come swiftly. My plan is to finish reading the rest of Sedaris' work and then find some new author. Most of the books we own fall into 3 categories:
1. Horror - Joe loves some Steven King, I do not.
2. Christian - I do like reading practical books on Christianity but it's not really reading for entertainment is it?
3. Board Books - Jude has a great selection of books but I think I should aim a little higher than My first Letters.
So I will be employing the wonderful Wake County Library online book request to fulfill my reading desires.
This is why I'm asking you... What have you been reading lately?
